There’s a lot of advice for writers out there. One of the big pieces of advice is about how it’s important to have a “platform” or become a “celebrity.” (Looks at self in the mirror.) Okay, while I do have a bit of the theatrical flair on occasion — namely my love for all things Queen and the times when I’m a fashionista — I’m not a celebrity. To me, a celebrity is a career path or a role. It’s a job.
I just like to write and tell stories.
I get frustrated with the whole “celebrity” talk, because a lot of the time it feels pretty competitive to me. Have you been to L.A.? Have you seen any of those reality shows? I can just hear the chatter now. “Well, how many books do you have on the best-seller’s list…” “I’ve been writing for years and have millions of dedicated readers…”
Yeah, that’s not for me. Granted, most authors are not snippy nor are they arrogant. I can’t think of one that I know (or have met) that would be like that. Like me, they just want to be validated for the work that they do. Hell, I’d kill for a little bit of validation now and again — but I don’t need to be a celebrity to do it. I just need to write more stories and hope that you like and connect with them.
In other news, I’ve got some great pictures from my trip into the great outdoors that represent locations within the Violet War setting. Sadly, I forgot (e.g. lost) my USB cable to connect the camera to my laptop, so I have to port the pictures over in a different way and edit them before I share them with you. So…I didn’t this week because I’m lazy and am enjoying my new Personal Trainer program. For the Nintendo DS. While wearing my awesome new shoes. (Gold wedges, just in case you’re curious.)
Ah well, this weekend I’ll be heading to WisCon and simply play things by ear. Just going to hang out. Not speaking on any panels or anything like that. I’ve also got some new projects I need to outline and have been working on getting the first chunk of ARGENTUM polished.
But more on that…next week…
Until next time, I hope that you find a story to get lost in. Let the words take you to a different place, wherever that may be.
