2010.7.02 Music is the Universal Language

Had an exciting conversation with a professional composer this past week. While I work on the novel, I’m also looking at ways to promote THE QUEEN OF CROWS to raise funds for the print edition, which people are asking for.

Hey, people. Remember that our world isn’t set up to allow writers, artists or musicians to work for nothing. Sorry for saying it, but there it is.

Anyway, one of the ideas I had was to put together a promotional trailer, but I needed music for it. This led to several challenges. I want/need to “obey” copyright law so that means whatever I use I either need permission for or it has to be in the public domain. The last promotional trailer I did for Violet War, which you can see at the bottom of this post, used music with permission from the band Nox Arcana.

This time, I need something a bit different because THE QUEEN OF CROWS takes place in a Native American village in the 1860s. Nox Arcana has a lot of great music, but I’m leaning toward something with a more authentic feel.

Well, after consulting with a professional composer, all signs are pointing to custom composed music for the trailer. Of course, I’ll ask you to spread the word and support this artist’s work once things are released, but this would be one of those times where I say: “Hells yeah!” For the first time, I get to create the video before the music is even written. How cool is that?

For the trailer, I’ve got a very strange angle I want to try. I think you might like it, but we’ll see.

Anyhoo, sorry I’ve been incognito and all, but I’ve been working my proverbial bum off. I haven’t forgotten about you and I promise I’ll try to be better about staying in touch.

Cheers for now,

- M
