Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the frequently asked questions page for The Violet War series. Feel free to Contact the Author to add your voice to the choir.
Why are you offering your novel online for free?
As an author who has been involved in publishing in some form or another for over 10 years, I am very sensitive to changes within the industry that affect my chances to get published. Additionally, my work has almost always been dubbed “experimental” by editors, which causes difficulty when editors try to determine what market might enjoy the stories I tell. This site is an attempt to find a base of readers who might enjoy my work, in the hopes that one day this series will be on the shelves of mainstream bookstores. This method has worked for other authors who have offered their novel online; this site allows me to do almost the same thing to reach potential readers.
What does “experimental” mean?
Typically, I take liberties with form, format, and themes to play around with aspects of a story in order to introduce new and interesting concepts. I intentionally downplayed the level of experimentation I typically do in my creative work, in order to produce a marketable (and readable) story. Specifically, I am utilizing contemporary writing styles like the first person point-of-view, in order to give readers a sense of familiarity and comfort level. Other than my intent, I can’t really speak to how other people think of the work because it’s still “new.”
How often will you update?
Updates have been planned on a weekly basis, but may increase depending upon my reader’s responses. The more people express an interest in the story, the more likely I will be to write content more frequently.
Will you post reader’s comments? Even the bad ones?
Comments will be screened, but accessible to readers. Both positive and negative feedback are encouraged, and I’ve enjoyed te commentary on my other published work in the past. As long as the negative comments have a “why” behind them, I will most certainly publish them. It’s one thing to say “I think this book sucks.” It’s another to say, “I think this book sucks because I don’t like the main character.”
Is magic real?
Occasionally I am asked this question because I write dark fantasy and horror. Simply, all of my work, like this book series, are works of fiction. I am not trying to alter or change anyone’s beliefs with the fictional content in my books, I am merely trying to provide readers with an entertaining story.
If you had to rate your book, who would it suitable for?
This book will not have explicit sex scenes, gore, or excessive violence so I feel that the content would be suitable for a broader audience. If The Violet War were a movie series, I would rate it PG-13.
What genre does your series fall into?
The setting is modern day, with the trappings of fantasy just around the corner. Many people might call this “urban fantasy.” In this day and age, it is quite difficult to categorize genres, because the lines are no longer clear as to what genre a book falls into.
